How I Broke My Craving Cycle and Found Freedom With Food

July 31, 20244 min read

“I know it was unhealthy and my body didn't appreciate that kind of stress, but I did it anyway...” - Sara Tam

Let’s get vulnerable for a moment. I am outing myself on my old ketchup chips obsession and how I

eating chips on desk

finally broke the cycle in a way that felt natural, gentle, and surprisingly effortless. My hope is that my story helps you understand your own cravings with more compassion and clarity.

For those who know me, you already know this was a real issue. And for those who do not, here is the truth.

For as long as I can remember, I was obsessed with potato chips. It felt like an addiction. I craved them, missed them when I did not have them, and relied on them for a temporary burst of joy. I could finish a family-sized bag of ketchup chips in one sitting and still want more. My tongue would burn, my fingers would be stained red, and my stomach would ache, yet I kept doing it.

I knew it was not good for me. I knew my body was stressed every time I did it. But I kept going back.

That was me four years ago. Today, I am satisfied with just the snack-sized bags occasionally because most days, I do not want them at all. I never thought this day would come, but it did. And the best part is that it happened without force, restriction, or willpower.

It happened because I changed my habits from the inside out.

How I Broke My Craving Cycle

Over the past several years, I have been on my own health and nutrition journey while building my business to support busy women just like myself! My habits began to shift slowly and gently, without feeling like I was forcing myself to change. Here is what made the biggest difference.

  1. I learned how habits are formed. Understanding the science behind habits changed everything. If you are curious, the book, Atomic Habits by James Clear is a game changer and a MUST read. It helped me understand why I kept repeating same patterns.

  2. I increased my self awareness. I started paying attention to the deeper reason behind my cravings. Instead of judging myself, I became curious. I asked myself what I was actually feeling when I reached for chips

  3. I identified the feeling I was chasing. This was the breakthrough moment.

Action: Eating Ketchup Chips.

Feeling: Stress relief, a dopamine hit (even if it was just temporary)

  1. I created a gentle swap. Instead of chips, I tried:

Action: Breathing Techniques, stretching & High Protein Snacks

    Feeling: Calmness and steady energy

I wasn’t just eating chips just for the sake of eating them. There was a deeper reason than that. This was not about restricting myself, instead replacing one action with another that gave me the same emotional payoff, without the crash or guilt

The Real Reason Behind My Cravings

I eventually realized I was not eating chips because I loved them. I was eating them because I was stressed.

Every time I had a hard day, a fight with my partner, or a tough day at work, I reached for chips to soothe myself. Over time, my brain linked stress with chips, and the habit became automatic.

To break the cycle, I had to address the root cause. I needed a new way to soothe myself that did not involve food. Once I found that, everything shifted. I felt more energized, more alive, and more connected to my body.

As I reflect on my own journey, I rarely crave chips anymore. When I do have them, they do not give me the same satisfaction they once did. This shift did not happen because I restricted myself. It happened because I learned how to manage my stress in healthier ways. Once my body felt more supported, the craving naturally softened.

A Gentle Reminder

"Our Habits determine the quality of our lives." - James Clear

This has been true for me, and it can be true for you too. You do not need to overhaul your entire life. You only need to understand the deeper reason behind your cravings and create one small, supportive shift at a time.

You deserve to feel steady, energized, and supported in your relationship with food. Cravings are not a sign of weakness. They are often a sign that your body or mind is asking for something deeper.

If this story resonates with you, I hope it helps you see your cravings with more compassion. You are not weak. You are not lacking willpower. You are simply trying to soothe something deeper, and there are healthier, more supportive ways to do that.

If you want to explore this more deeply, I would love to connect! Book a free discovery call and take the next step toward feeling more balanced and supported in your relationship with food through my Nutrition Game Changer Program. Book Now.

TESTIMONIALS

Elijah, Swim Coach

"One thing I like about the program, there’s a lot of hypersensitivity to context, you talk a lot about HOW, and WHERE you are in the process. For instance, your environment, building that hyper awareness, it’s something that is very nuance in your programming. Adult culture focuses on JUST DOING the THING, but in this program we focus on the WHY, when we aren’t doing it → It’s something I value a lot, the fact that you focus on the “WHY” and know that sometimes there are lots of obstacles that stop us from doing things not because we don't want to do it"

My sessions with Sara for the past 90 days has been an incredibly rewarding journey.

Prior to having the sessions with Sara, I was desiring a change in my life. through personal experience of my own, I learned time is finite for everyone. And I wanted change in my current state.

Having these sessions with Sara, she created a safe and comforting space where I was able to express my challenges and obstacles where she provided profound guidance.

Through small positive changes in nutrition, physical and mental health, I was able to positively influence my daily life.

Before working with Sara I struggled with staying motivated and making time in my busy schedule for cooking for myself. Sara taught me to celebrate the small wins and to stay focused and also to understand the connection between nutrition and mood. I also appreciate her approach to fitness and nutrition that is affirming, body positive and centered on intuitive eating. Working with Sara has helped me have more body awareness, more energy, and more movement in my life!
