“I know it was unhealthy and my body didn't appreciate that kind of stress, but I did it anyway...” - Sara Tam
Let’s get vulnerable for a moment. I am outing myself on my old ketchup chips obsession and how I

finally broke the cycle in a way that felt natural, gentle, and surprisingly effortless. My hope is that my story helps you understand your own cravings with more compassion and clarity.
For those who know me, you already know this was a real issue. And for those who do not, here is the truth.
For as long as I can remember, I was obsessed with potato chips. It felt like an addiction. I craved them, missed them when I did not have them, and relied on them for a temporary burst of joy. I could finish a family-sized bag of ketchup chips in one sitting and still want more. My tongue would burn, my fingers would be stained red, and my stomach would ache, yet I kept doing it.
I knew it was not good for me. I knew my body was stressed every time I did it. But I kept going back.
That was me four years ago. Today, I am satisfied with just the snack-sized bags occasionally because most days, I do not want them at all. I never thought this day would come, but it did. And the best part is that it happened without force, restriction, or willpower.
It happened because I changed my habits from the inside out.
Over the past several years, I have been on my own health and nutrition journey while building my business to support busy women just like myself! My habits began to shift slowly and gently, without feeling like I was forcing myself to change. Here is what made the biggest difference.
I learned how habits are formed. Understanding the science behind habits changed everything. If you are curious, the book, Atomic Habits by James Clear is a game changer and a MUST read. It helped me understand why I kept repeating same patterns.
I increased my self awareness. I started paying attention to the deeper reason behind my cravings. Instead of judging myself, I became curious. I asked myself what I was actually feeling when I reached for chips
I identified the feeling I was chasing. This was the breakthrough moment.
Action: Eating Ketchup Chips.
Feeling: Stress relief, a dopamine hit (even if it was just temporary)
I created a gentle swap. Instead of chips, I tried:
Action: Breathing Techniques, stretching & High Protein Snacks
Feeling: Calmness and steady energy
I wasn’t just eating chips just for the sake of eating them. There was a deeper reason than that. This was not about restricting myself, instead replacing one action with another that gave me the same emotional payoff, without the crash or guilt
The Real Reason Behind My Cravings
I eventually realized I was not eating chips because I loved them. I was eating them because I was stressed.
Every time I had a hard day, a fight with my partner, or a tough day at work, I reached for chips to soothe myself. Over time, my brain linked stress with chips, and the habit became automatic.
To break the cycle, I had to address the root cause. I needed a new way to soothe myself that did not involve food. Once I found that, everything shifted. I felt more energized, more alive, and more connected to my body.
As I reflect on my own journey, I rarely crave chips anymore. When I do have them, they do not give me the same satisfaction they once did. This shift did not happen because I restricted myself. It happened because I learned how to manage my stress in healthier ways. Once my body felt more supported, the craving naturally softened.
"Our Habits determine the quality of our lives." - James Clear
This has been true for me, and it can be true for you too. You do not need to overhaul your entire life. You only need to understand the deeper reason behind your cravings and create one small, supportive shift at a time.
You deserve to feel steady, energized, and supported in your relationship with food. Cravings are not a sign of weakness. They are often a sign that your body or mind is asking for something deeper.
If this story resonates with you, I hope it helps you see your cravings with more compassion. You are not weak. You are not lacking willpower. You are simply trying to soothe something deeper, and there are healthier, more supportive ways to do that.
